Wherein I Nerd Out Musically about Comedy

dadsbigplan:

Regarding the return of Invisible Engine, Dutch West’s Josh Rubin wrote:

I have admired Invisible Engine since their invisible inception way back and love all three members like brothers. I have to say with all seriousness, they never let me down. Constantly reinventing the funny wheel, always original, and prolific as hell. Makes me miss the garage band days of DW.

Being as it is 3:15 in the A.M., and I am ingloriously and inretrievably awake due to some twinsy fuss-action, my brain locked on that last sentence with the unshakeable tenacity of a nerd-dog frenzy. Which, as anyone who has EVER had a comic book discussion with me can attest, is far far far from a pretty thing.

So without further ado…

Sketch Groups as bands:

  • Dutch West: Josh’s sentiment aside, DW’s work has always evoked a bigger than a 4 track-in-the-garage feel for me, but I can see the point. Based on the ease with which they shift gears without sacrificing quality I’m gonna have to go with Beck. Sure the budgets may change, but they’re still gonna do whatever the hell they want, and that’s just dandy by me.
  • Invisible Engine : First instinct says ‘Captain Beefheart’ for the sheer ‘where the fuck is this going?’ factor, but I’m then forced to admit (to my eternal music snob shame) that I don’t actually LIKE Captain Beefheart, but I adore IE. So Flaming Lips becomes the best comparison in terms of style-to-adoration ratio. Due to the sheer breadth of material and involvement in other projects, a Guided By Voices argument could be made as well.
  • Team Tiger Awesome : Nick will hate me for not picking Poison, but once again, I don’t actually like Poison. I’d offer up The Darkness, but a shitty follow-up album rules them out. So to find the appropriate ratio of adoration and stylistic impression I offer up a split-the-difference of Electric Six & Chromeo. (To elaborate: Electric Six is serious about being entertainingly insane, while Chromeo looks back on the 90’s with a pure and sincere love). Sorry, Nick. I can’t in good conscience pick Meatloaf because the only decent song Jim Steinman ever wrote was Total Eclipse of the Heart.
  • Summer of Tears : My Morning Jacket Because like MMJ, I dig the hell out of them and wish they’d just hurry up and put out more material already.

And holy shit, I spent 35 minutes on this.

*sigh*

Dutch West

susannawolff:

I just watched the entire Dutch West video collection (even the graveyard). You might wonder why I did this today and/or why I hadn’t done this before, considering I work with 2 of DW’s members. The answers are procrastination and, uh, I don’t know, respectively.

Here’s what I have concluded: Sam, Vinnie, Josh, Elaine, and Matt are fantastic.

I mean, I always knew they were talented, but these videos just blew me away. Not only are they hilarious and full of terrific performances, but the fact that those guys actually have the ambition and determination to put in the work to make them, well, that just leaves me in awe.

 awwwwwwwwwww!
